Will London Strike Olympic Gold?

This summer, London becomes the first city to host the Olympics three times. As the city gets ready for the Games, we take a look at some of the preparations and the benefits the event might bring.

Against the historical backdrop of the city, the Games will cast London in a new light as a modern metropolis. First, there is the stadium, which has been hailed as the most sustainable ever built. With a capacity of 80,000, it is 75 percent lighter in steel than average stadia and uses 40 percent less carbon. The ring at the top was constructed from disused gas pipes, and a sustainable fabric wrap will encircle the building for the duration of the Games.

The surrounding Olympic Park includes an Energy Center employing renewable energies. Perhaps the most interesting design is the Pumping Station, with its bright pink cylinders and eco-friendly roof garden. The exterior is decorated with drawings by Sir John Bazalgette, the engineer who created the sewer network for London in the 1850s.

Technology will play a key role, with a Technology Operations Center overseeing competition results, IT, power and telecommunications for all 94 Olympic venues. In an attempt to make this the first cashless Olympics, the organizers have set up a swipe card system that will allow spectators to make purchases from over 5,000 retailers.
