Where do you think all the cute, furry puppies and kittens found in pet stores come from? A good percentage is from breeders with good _(1)_ that provide healthy and loving environments for their pets. However, it's safe to say that themajority are supplied by puppy mills and kitten factories, _(2)_ the animals are bred and raised in horrible conditions. The pens are extremely small and dirty, which leads _(3)_ less than healthy pets. According to the Humane Society of the US, two to four million dogs are born in American puppy mills every year, with most of them ending up in pet stores. Tragically, many of the cats and dogs that are _(4)_ from stores end up in animal shelters because people have a hard time with the responsibility of caring for them. Sadly, the abandoned animals have very little hope for _(5)_ in the shelters and most are eventually put to sleep. In the US alone, one cat or dog is put _(6)_ every eight seconds, totaling four million deaths each year. This is a hard statistic to swallow, but fortunately Los Angeles, California, is doing something about it. In October 2012, the city adopted a ban that _(7)_ pet stores from selling commercially bred cats, dogs, and rabbits. The new law requires all pet stores to sell only rescued animals, and anyone violating it will be _(8)_ US$250 for the first offense, double that for the second time, and double that for the third. This is sure to reduce the number of killings the city performs while promoting the benefits of adopting rescued animals, many of _(9)_ came from pet stores in the first place. Hopefully, this _(10)_ will become popular and more cities in the US and around the world will do the same.
