Lawmakers slam Ministry of Education for its response to student protesters (2012/11/30)

The sale of Next Media to a local conglomerate sparked a wave of student protests. The Ministry of Education responded by sending an email to universities saying it was concerned about the students’ health. To opposition lawmakers, it felt like a return to White Terror tactics.

On Nov. 27, a student coalition braved the cold and rain and police to stage a protest outside the Joint Government Office Building.

Two days later, students gathered outside the Fair Trade Commission. They did not expect that later the same afternoon, the Ministry of Education would send an email to 37 colleges and universities. In the email, the ministry mentions how students have organized to oppose the Next Media sale. It goes on to say that the ministry cares for the students’ health, and it wants the universities to heed the students’ actions. Included is a list of the schools that student protesters attend.

Lin Fei-fan
Student Organizer
I think using this method to investigate and threaten students is going too far.

Many students strongly oppose the action, So far, none have received a phone call. Pan-green legislators were visibly upset.

Cheng Li-chiun
DPP Legislator
This is like the White Terror has returned to campuses. We demand that (Education Minister) Chiang Wei-ning give a formal apology to the students.

Tsai Chi-chang
DPP Legislator
I think all these students can take care of themselves. Don’t exercise fake concern to exert control over them.

The Ministry of Education stressed it really does care about the students’ health and never collected a list of names. But the students don’t seem to want the ministry’s concern and used Facebook to express mock appreciation.
