By-election to replace convicted legislator puts KMT in tough position (2012/11/30)

顏清標國黨

顏清標以無黨身份在中部政壇喊水會結凍，國民黨也敬他幾分，過去在台中第二選區，兩度禮讓顏清標沒有提名候選人，不過，這一回顏清標出缺的席次，國民黨還要繼續禮讓嗎?有意角逐的紀國棟向黨中央喊話初選一定要有民主機制，暗示不能拱手讓人。

顏清標明明是無黨籍，不過，過去選舉，立法院長王金平曾來授旗、總統馬英九也來披彩帶，和國民黨感情麻吉麻吉，進到立法院，顏清標不只配合藍營投票，也為國民黨衝鋒陷陣。

如今顏清標即將三度入監服刑，並且搶先宣布將由具有國民黨籍的長子顏寬恆代父出征，卻沒有先跟國民黨打聲招呼。

無疑的是，顏清標在中部勢力可見一斑，不過，少了國民黨的奧援，顏寬恒接班之路，困難重重。而國民黨是要自己接管，還是延續和顏清標的合作默契，考驗著黨主席馬英九的政治智慧。

A legislative seat in Taichung is up for grabs now that local chieftain Yen Ching-piao is off to prison. Yen, an independent who is closely aligned with the KMT, says his son will run to take his place. Analysts wonder if the KMT will hold a primary or simply bow to Yen’s wishes and not challenge his son. 

When Yen Ching-piao ran as an independent in previous elections, KMT heavyweights turned out in force to stump for him. Among them: Legislator Speaker Wang Jin-pyng and President Ma Ying-jeou. In the legislature Yen returned the favor. He voted with the KMT and gave the party some muscle.

But now Yen heads to prison for the third time. With the loss of freedom comes the loss of his spot in the legislature. But Yen won’t fade without a fight. He says his son, KMT member Yen Kuan-heng, will run to take over the empty seat. Before Yen made this announcement, he never consulted the KMT.

It will be a disaster if democratic methods aren’t followed. The reputation of party headquarters will be severely challenged.

Yen Ching-piao remains a force in central Taiwan politics. But without support of the KMT, his son faces a difficult election. President Ma, who doubles as KMT chairman, now must decide whether the party should back Yen’s son or cut ties with the family and put forward another candidate.
