Civil service applicants in China say test becoming harder (2012/10/16)

Government jobs in China are known as a “golden rice bowl,” in reference to the common perception of good pay for easy work that is secure. But applicants to this year’s civil service recruitment program say times seem to have changed.

The typical Chinese person believes that life is slow for the average civil worker. They sip tea, read the paper and do little else. But this year applicants taking the civil service exam say matters have changed.

This year the civil service exam is more detailed and asks a lot more of the applicants. It is being called history’s most difficult route to a golden rice bowl.

More than 140 Chinese government agencies are seeking over 20,000 new workers. About half list detailed job requirements.

For example, the Ministry of Supervision has nine vacancies that require frequent travel. The Ministry of Water Resources and the State Oceanic Administration need workers who can go to disaster areas. Work often takes place on weekends.

Exam Taker
If the work is good, it doesn’t matter if it’s hard. Many people will take the exam. We can learn a lot. If we instead take a job at a private enterprise, we would still have to go on a lot of business trips.

Despite the tough requirements, a record 2 million people signed up for an exam this year.
