二) 逗號 , (comma)

2.2 兩個獨立子句(independent clause)若呈現對等(coordinate)的關係，用對等連接詞(coordinating conjunction)如and, but, or, for, so, nor, yet連接兩個子句時，這種句型就是所謂的合句(compound sentence)，應在對等連接詞之前加逗號。如以下例句:

Myopia is a condition which occurs when the eyeball is too long, or the eye's focusing mechanism is too powerful, and light rays are focused in front of the retina.

近視是由於眼球過長，或是眼睛對焦機制過強，而使光線集中在視網膜之前。 

Translation product can be observed directly, but information on the mental operations required in the translation process is available only indirectly.

翻譯成品可以直接觀察，但是翻譯過程所必備的心智運作只能間接得知。 

但是要注意，逗號並不適用於連接單字或片語的連接詞之前，如以下就是錯誤例句:

*Radiation will be used to eliminate, or control the size of the new tumors.

 將使用放射線來消除或控制腫瘤的大小。

說明: 上句的連接詞or連接兩個動詞eliminate和control，不能在or之前加逗號，正確寫法如下:

Radiation will be used to eliminate or control the size of the new tumors. 

*Sales in Japan were down 26 percent in the latest quarter, and are likely to continue to decline in fiscal 2011.

最新一季在日本的銷售額下降26%，而且於2011會計年度可能持續下跌。

說明: 上句的連接詞and並不是連接兩個子句，不能在其前加逗號，正確寫法如下:

Sales in Japan were down 26 percent in the latest quarter and are likely to continue to decline in fiscal 1999.
