Two Coast Guard vessels set out early this morning toward the disputed Tiaoyutai Islands, presumably to defend Taiwan’s fishing interests and sovereignty in the area. The ships only made it to within 58 nautical miles of the islands, however, disappointing fishermen and elected officials who followed the Coast Guard ships.
The Coast Guard’s biggest cutter, the Ho Hsing, set out at 7 a.m. this morning from Keelung toward the Tiaoyutais.
The Ho Hsing led a second cutter, the Hwalien, to take over patrol duties from another Coast Guard vessel. Because of the sensitivity of the Tiaoyutais issue, the Navy provided an escort to the Coast Guard boats.
After sailing for over four hours, the cutters took over patrol duties about 58 nautical miles west of the disputed islands, much farther away than the scheduled 25 nautical miles.
Hsu Kuo-jing
Ho Hsing Captain
We are now about 50 nautical miles from the Tiaoyutais. If fishermen are fishing or are harassed, we will immediately rush to the rescue.
The Coast Guard advertised its mission as protecting Taiwan’s fishing interests. But fishermen and elected officials accompanying the mission were disappointed that the Coast Guard stopped so far away from the Tiaoyutais.
Lin Chi-shan
Yilan County Councilman
We came here today and ended up in the area of Pengjia Islet to see how these vessels protected fishermen and took over patrols. We did not achieve the goal of seeing our Tiaoyutais. We truly feel very disappointed today.
Councilmen from Yilan County, which according to Taiwan has jurisdiction over the islands, issued a petition today in response to the mission. It called for more than 60 fishing vessels to be dispatched to the Tiaoyutais on Sept. 22 to make a clear declaration of sovereignty.
