Seoul Power
While it might still lack the punching power of its neighbors Beijing and Tokyo, Seoul is rapidly emerging from the shadows of the Asian heavyweights.
One area in which the South Korean capital is quickly picking up momentum is its tourism industry. The city is set to host a record 10 million visitors by the end of this year, most of whom will filter through Incheon International Airport, which has been ranked the best in the world for five years straight.
The city has worked hard to emphasize its unique blend of tradition and modernity, but its real trump card lies in entertainment-based tourism. Over 80 percent of tourists to Seoul are Asian, and many of them are Korean wave obsessives — a fact not lost on the authorities. The Korean Tourism Organization devotes comprehensive sections of its Web site to K-pop, as well as movies and dramas. These include the vital statistics of the “idols,” as well as guides to set locations and information about tours. Banners posted up around Seoul announce filming hotspots, and there are plans to create a street in Gangnam devoted entirely to the entertainment industry.
