Shanghai:
It's the most populous city proper in the world, but Shanghai is a relative youngster by Chinese standards.
Perched1 on the Yangtze Delta on China's eastern coast, Shanghai is approximately equidistant from Hong Kong and Beijing. European traders early recognized the strategic advantages of the location. Having occupied the city during the First Opium War, the British forced the Qing government to open Shanghai as one of several treaty ports in 1842. A further unequal treaty granted concessions to European powers and the U.S. in the city. By the early 20th century, Shanghai was establishing itself as the most important port in Asia.
Shanghai's "ocean style" culture has been influenced by the ebb and flow of immigrants over the years. The city is associated with modernity in Chinese eyes as many significant technological and intellectual developments have taken place there.
The strongest evidence of Shanghai's diversity can be found in its architecture. From the eclecticism of the Bund, to its skyscrapers, the city boasts an incredible range of styles. A construction boom in the 1920-30s left Shanghai with one of the world's largest collections of Art Deco buildings. Meanwhile, more recently, Shanghai's futuristic cityscape has turned the city into a mecca for the cyberpunk movement.
