Question Protocol for Interviewees
You are coming to the end of a stellar job interview. You don't want to get ahead of yourselfor anything, but you're pretty sure you've aced or anything, but you're pretty sure you've aced it, handling everything they've thrown at you. Then, the interviewer hits you with it: "Now, do you have any questions?" What? You hadn't thought about that. You rack your brains for anything vaguely relevant to ask, but you're stumped.
Asking direct questions about salary and benefits is usually a no-no, unless the subject is broached by the interviewer. You should also shy away from asking questions to which the answer is patently obvious or available in the information you have presumably already perused. The most effective questions are those that allow you to demonstrate that you've done your homework and have a genuine interest in the company's operations and the position.
However, there are some ways of getting at the more sensitive information without landing yourself in hot water. For example, if you want to ask about job security or turnover, rather than ask directly, you might inquire what the company does to retain good employees. Instead of asking outright when the manager last fired someone, you could rephrase the question as: "How does the company address performance issues?" Whatever your approach, it's a safe rule of thumb to focus on the company and the position rather than on what you stand to gain.
