Taiwanese students shine at Red Dot design awards (2012/10/02)

Taiwanese design students have once again won acclaim from Germany’s Red Dot. Out of 3,600 applicants, Taiwan has two of the three finalists competing for the highest concept award to be announced later this month.

Taiwanese university students have once again won acclaim at an international design competition. A student at National Taipei University of Technology created a machine that can take spare foreign currency and either add it to a SIM card or convert it to Skype points. Customers can also donate the entire amount to charity, or just a small portion that can’t be converted.

After foreign currency is exchanged, there is a small surplus after the decimal point. We can take that small amount and donate it to charity. Every year 2 billion people pass through airports. Their microdonations can turn into a large donation.

Have you ever gone to an area with no mobile phone signal? A graduate from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology recently solved this problem by developing an emergency communication system. It involves a base on the ground and a floating balloon that carries a receiver into the air. Furthermore, the balloon has sleeves that can turn with air currents and generate electricity.

These designs are two of the three finalists for the top Red Dot concept award, to be announced on Oct. 19.
