Special program encourages overseas Taiwan doctors to return home (2012/10/03)

北美台灣醫師協會的「鮭魚返鄉計畫」，鼓勵在美國的退休的醫師，返鄉行醫解決醫師荒，同時照顧偏遠地區的病患。因為台灣不承認美國的專科執照，導致這群在美國行醫二、三十年，經驗豐富的老醫師，一度還必須重新考試取得證照。
幾位在羅東聖母醫院服務的老醫師，放棄在美國悠閒的退休生活，自願回台下鄉行醫。

老醫師有滿腔熱血，卻因為是在美國取得專科醫師證照，台灣不承認，只能硬著頭皮，跟年輕醫師一起參加資格認證考試。

“我是覺得有點麻煩，這些已經退休的，在美國得到專科醫師執照，有的已經是院長，有的已經是教授，那你還要回來口試”
還好後來透過"鮭魚返鄉"計畫，只要旅外返鄉醫師在花東服務三年，就可以取得專科醫師執照。羅東聖母醫院呼籲政府不要侷限區域，才能提高醫師返台行醫的意願。
The North American Taiwanese Medical Association is encouraging members to return to Taiwan to help solve a physician shortage. But Taiwan does not recognize specialist licenses issued in the US, meaning some doctors with three decades of experience have to sit for a licensing exam once again.
Several of these elderly doctors at St. Mary's Hospital Luodung gave up leisurely retirement life in the US to return to Taiwan on a voluntary basis to practice medicine in the countryside.

We have come back to devote ourselves to Taiwan and our hometowns.
Unfortunately, not everything has been smooth for these returning doctors. This individual holds a specialist license that is not recognized by Taiwan. He had no choice but to sit for the certification exam once again with younger physicians.

I felt a little bit of inconvenience. Those who have retired and received their specialist license in the United States, some who have already become professors and deans of departments , now they have to come back and take an oral exam.
Overseas doctors who return to their hometown in Hualien or Taitung and serve for three years can obtain a specialist license under a special program. St. Mary's Hospital in Luodong is urging the government not to restrict the area in which this program is applicable as it hopes more physicians would be willing to return to Taiwan to practice medicine.
