[[AIT處長 馬啟思]]
“這是台灣和美國之間,一個非常正面的進展,這將會促進商業 旅遊,讓雙邊互利,這對於我們台美關係,是全新又令人興奮的一步”

At long last, the United States granted Taiwanese citizens visa-free status. AIT Director Christopher J. Marut addressed the media today, noting the move represents a positive step in Taiwan-US relations.
Janet Napolitano (Oct. 2)
US Secretary of Homeland Security
And to underscore this, I am pleased to announce today, that in consultation with Secretary Hilary Clinton, I have designated Taiwan as the newest member of the visa-waiver program.
Beginning on Nov. 1 those who possess an ROC passport with an IC chip and household registration in Taiwan need only register basic information online at the Electric System for Travel Authorization website and pay a US$14 dollar fee. After completing this process, they can freely enter the US for tourism or business for up to 90 days, valid for up to two years.
David Lin
Minister of Foreign Affairs
This represents important progress (in Taiwan-U.S. relations). And starting from Nov. 1 we will extend the length of stay for US nationals in Taiwan from 30 days to 90 days.
Christopher J. Marut
AIT Director
This is a very positive development for both Taiwan and the United States. It will mean increased business and increased travel, which will benefit both of us. This is a new exciting move forward in our relationship.
Christopher J. Marut is the new AIT director. In addition to announcing the visa waiver program, he said he will strive to invite high-ranking US officials to Taiwan and will also seek US arms sales to Taiwan. He added that he will pursue more educational, cultural, economic and trade exchanges.
Taiwan also wants US help in joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership, but Marut said it is too early to comment.
