Cuts to State Affairs Fund and Cabinet’s Administrative Fund planned (2012/11/06)

President Ma Ying-jeou has agreed to reduce his State Affairs Fund by 25 percent, and Premier Sean Chen pledged a similar reduction to the Cabinet’s Administrative Fund. They hope these cuts will be enough to appease pan-green legislators calling for greater attention to the ailing economy.

President Ma used an opportunity to speak before Chinese business leaders to make a major announcement about his State Affairs Fund.

President Ma Ying-jeou
Our government has encountered fiscal difficulties, so I would like to take this opportunity to announce that we are reducing the State Affairs Fund by NT$10 million. We hope our society won’t be subject to partisan disputes and unnecessary debate so we can fully concentrate on improving the economy.

President Ma and Premier Chen made the budget announcements nearly at the same time. The Cabinet will see its Administrative Fund of around NT$10.3 million cut by one-quarter in 2013, or about NT$2.25mn, while the President’s State Affairs Fund in 2013 will go from NT$40 million to NT$30 million, losing NT$10 million.

Although the pan-green camp criticized Ma for increasing the State Affairs Fund, Ma responded in a press release saying all information related to the fund has always been made public and all expenditures have been legal.
