Airbus continues to prosper in spite of Europe’s struggles (2012/11/11)

EVA Air executives recently flew to Germany for the handing over of a new Airbus airliner that will soon join their fleet. The jet represents one of many orders pouring into Airbus, a unit of the European aerospace company EADS. While the world economy remains sluggish and Europe struggles under the burden of its debts, Airbus and the airline manufacturing industry are a bright spot. Tonight we too travel to Germany for a closer look at Airbus.

Two companies lead the way when it comes to building airliners that carry 100 or more passengers – America’s Boeing and Europe’s Airbus. Fierce rivals for years, over the past decade Airbus has moved to the front. Total revenues in the European aerospace industry grew by 7 percent in 2011, despite the debt crisis plaguing the continent.

As many European airlines are facing pressure to lay off workers, Airbus, the aircraft manufacturer, however, got more orders, so it has led Airbus to increase its staff by 5,000 a year.

FTV visited the Airbus assembly plant in Germany’s Hamburg. In the banquet hall, virtually every day an aircraft handing over ceremony takes place. The company even created a restaurant to receive clients. A steady stream of customers passes through.

Airbus’ three biggest clients for civilian airline orders include American Airlines, Germany’s Lufthansa and China Southern. The process from placing an order to delivery takes seven to eight years. There are more than 3 million parts in one aircraft. To speed up production, Airbus outsources production of these parts worldwide. Assembly takes place in Hamburg or France’s Toulouse.

Airbus Spokesman
Three million parts in the aircraft. And obviously some parts also come from Taiwan. We have the green, the brighter green section up here comes from Taiwan. Its pieces come from Korea, then they’re being shipped to Taiwan and assembled there and then shipped to Hamburg or Toulouse for the final assembly of the aircraft.

Airline production is at a peak. Demand is high for workers at Airbus, from design to assembly. Aerospace engineers with a master’s degree or PhD are needed, and there are even opportunities for young adults with only a high school degree.

Airbus Spokesman
Where we hire people fresh out of school, high school for example, or middle school. And we give them three years of training, in mechanical training for example, in building and assembling the aircraft.

Global air transport growth is forecast to average 4.8 percent over the next two decades. There will be a need for 28,000 new aircraft. Fleets already feature the Airbus A380, a double-decker that can carry nearly 600 passengers. What’s next? Fuel efficient, low noise, environmentally friendly, spacious, faster – this is the future of airliners.
