ensioners regret decision to receive lump sum payment (2013/01/03)

In October DPP legislators and media outlets struck fear in the hearts of older workers and retirees, claiming that the national labor pension system would be bankrupt by 2027. Over the next two months near record numbers then applied to receive their pension in one lump sum rather than monthly installments. But now it seems like the pension system won’t collapse, and many people are regretting their rush to receive payment.
Lawmaker office phones are ringing off the hook. The callers are retirees who applied for their pension in one installment. Now they want to switch to monthly payments.

Some voters have called the office to say they regretted taking a lump sum payment and want to return the money. Government agencies need to instill confidence in workers and provide abundant information. It’s necessary for the workers to have a chance to make a better decision.
Once a lump sum pension payment is made, it’s too late to go back. Take a 60-year-old retiree for example. If he worked for 30 years with an average monthly insurance salary of NT$32,000, he would qualify for a lump sum payment of NT$1.44 million. But if he opted for monthly payments of NT$14,880, after eight years he’d have received more money.
“Taking all the money out in one installment raises worries that I’ll run out of cash. Monthly payments will last longer. But the government can’t be trusted. It worries me because it changes all the time.”
Retirees have to think about whom they trust more with their money: the government or themselves. They also must consider how they will support themselves if they live for many more years.
