Beijing sees riots as protestors even wave the ROC flag
Anti-Japanese protests took place in Beijing yesterday, after Japan’s recent purchase of the islands. Amongst the sea of protestors waving the PRC flag, an ROC flag was spotted, the first public display since 1949 as China continues to ban the display of emblems representing the ROC. However, legislators say it may be a ruse as China may be manipulating the Tiaoyutai protests to mask its true ambition of taking Taiwan.
The Tiaoyutai Islands sovereignty dispute has led to a swelling anti-Japanese sentiment in China. Demonstrators attending protest rallies have even spotted an ROC flag with the character’s “China’s Tiaoyutai Islands” on the flag.
Since the Tiaoyutai Island issue flared up, China has been taking advantage of Taiwan. The Tiaoyutai protests are provoking nationalism and patriotism, and are aimed at antagonizing Japan and other neighboring countries. It’s easy for the international community to mistakenly believe that the Tiaoyutai Islands are an internal issue between Taiwan and China.

"The ROC flag serves a function as it is meant to rally Taiwanese people. Basically, they want to use the Tiaoyutai Islands to takeover Taiwan, putting it between two pieces of bread and eating it whole.
Both lawmakers and scholars have questioned the use of the ROC flag by protesters. And in light of the suppression of the ROC flag during Chinese envoy Chen Yunlin’s visit to Taiwan, it seems strange to see the ROC flag now flying in the streets of Beijing. However, many warn we should be wary of China playing its nationalism card, and the potentially grave effects it may have for Taiwan in the near future.
