More Chinese cities host raucous protests over Tiaoyutai purchase (2012/09/16)

Tiaoyutai protests continue to grow and intensify in China with the number of cities participating growing dramatically. In many of these protests, Japanese consulates have been the focus of these mass gatherings.

Protesters broke through this police cordon as shots were fired. Today, another clash between protestors and police took place in front of the Japanese Consulate in Shenzhen. In order to control the scene, police fired more than 30 cans of tear gas.

It’s the first weekend following the Japanese government’s purchase of the Tiaoyutai Islands and anti-Japanese sentiment has spread throughout China. In total, protests have taken place at more than 70 cities, with frequent scens of protestors burning the Japanese flag.

They are playing with fire. I think they think Chinese people are too weak.

In Qingdao, Shandong Province, ten factories and production lines operated by Japanese companies experienced vandalism. Japanese car dealers also saw their exhibition rooms smashed and hundreds of cars set ablaze. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, also appeared before the media saying he had lodged a protest before the Chinese government. He requested they safeguard and protect the safety of all Japanese citizens.

Japanese Prime Minister
Unfortunately, this problem involves the safety of Japanese people and Japanese enterprises. I have lodged a protest to the Chinese government, and have also asked China to protect the security of Japanese people.

Many are starting to fear the repercussions of Tiaoytai protests which are spreading like wildfire throughout China, as they hope calmer heads will eventually prevail.
