Analysts say President Ma wants to keep Sean Lien out of Taipei mayor race (2012/11/07)

馬總統昨天批評連勝文的丐幫說"不得體"，還在國民黨中山會報上，主動提起未來台北市長選舉，被解讀是衝著連勝文而來，甚至引爆馬總統為了替屬意的台北市長人選，行政院副院長江宜樺護航，才會刻意打壓連勝文，要阻擋他參選2014。

日前，國民黨中央委員連勝文『經濟不好，選上也是丐幫幫主』說法，掀起黨內的茶壺風暴，更讓馬總統把矛頭對準他，除了點名丐幫說不妥，馬總統還主動提到2014台北市長選舉，要大家應該把心思力量放在經營基層，向外拓展選票，只要贏得初選，就是本黨支持的候選人，這番話當然又被認為是衝著可能參選台北市長的連勝文而來。

2014台北市長的卡位戰，甚至還傳出陰謀論。

連勝文還沒表態，已經讓政壇刮起一陣風暴，台北市長選舉的話題，也因為他提前升溫。

Bickering is underway between the nation’s leader and the son of one of its former leaders. After KMT member Sean Lien gave critical comment that could be taken as criticism of the president, President Ma Ying-jeou gave a terse response. Many believe Lien has his sights set on becoming Taipei mayor two years from now, and some analysts believe Ma has begun taking steps to thwart Lien’s ambitions. 

Last week KMT Central Committee member Sean Lien sparked a firestorm in the KMT. He said, quote, “If the economy is bad, getting elected only makes you the leader of the beggars.” President Ma, who is presiding over a sluggish economy, took offense. First he called Lien’s choice of words inappropriate.

Then Ma said the most important order of business for the party is the 2014 local elections. He wants everyone to focus on good governance in the localities and to expand the party’s support. Ma continued by saying the party will back the candidate that wins its primaries. Analysts think this last comment was directed at Lien, who may run for mayor of Taipei.

If you’re the party chairman, you should maintain neutrality in the primaries. If he gives too much support to someone like Jiang Yi-huah, people will feel the primaries were unfair.

Many theories have emerged ahead of 2014, when the municipalities, including Taipei, will choose new leaders.

It’s becoming clearer that President Ma will put forward Jiang Yi-huah to run (for mayor of Taipei). President Ma worries that Sean Lien will steal his thunder and affect his influence in the KMT, so the president is striking first.

Sean Lien, the son of former Vice President Lien Chan, has yet to say he will run in Taipei. But politicians are already preparing for the possibility that the princeling will step forward.
