有這樣一句話“I wouldn’t say I had the time of my life, but at least everything went smoothly.”，翻譯這句話的關鍵在於理解“have the time of my life”的意思，如果按照字面意思翻譯，顯然說不清楚。

我們都知道“time”在英語裏指“時間”，通常是不可數名詞。有一個短語叫“have a good time”，表示“玩得很高興”。（也可以說have a great/nice/jolly/wonderful/high old time）；而“have an easy time”指“日子過得輕鬆舒坦”，反過來“have a bad/difficult/hard/harsh/poor/rough/thin/tough time”指“日子過得艱難”。“have a time”本身也可表示“遇到麻煩，過一段苦日子”的意思，例如“He really had a time to deal with the naughty boy yesterday.”（昨天他對付那個頑皮的男孩可是費了半天勁。）

“無煙車廂”怎麼翻譯？

誤譯：This is a railway carriage where there is no smoke.
正譯：1.This is a no-smoking carriage.
            2.This is a non-smoker. 
　    （吸煙者車廂為smoker）

解釋： 
smoke有“可燃物產生的煙”和“香煙產生的煙”兩種意思。而“無煙”有三層意思：

一、“燃燒時不冒煙”。譯為smokeless，即free from smoke。這裡，smokeless是描述性的。例如：
1.無煙燃料燃燒時不冒煙。 
　Smokeless fuel burns without producing smoke.

二、“嚴禁煙火，包括吸煙”，用smokeless表達，是警示性的。例如：
2.我們住在林區，那是無煙區。 
　We live in a forest region.That is a smokeless zone. 
  smokeless有多義性，a smokeless room會造成歧義，可能是a room freefrom smoke（沒有煙的房間）；也可能是a room where smoking is forbidden（禁止吸煙的房間）。例如：
3.他們用電燒水，所以他們的鍋爐房是個無煙房間。 
　They use electricity to heat water,so their boiler room is a smokeless room.
4.這是會議室，也是無煙房間。 
　This is a meeting room, and it is a smokeless room.

三、“不消耗燃料的，不造成環境污染的”，用smokeless表達。這裡smokeless是比喻。例如：
5.旅遊業是一種無煙產業。 
  Tourism is a smokeless industry.
