Taiwanese scientist on team that found ‘smoking gun’ evidence of cosmic inflation (2014/03/19)

Scientists are still celebrating the detection of gravitational waves, a finding that provides the strongest confirmation yet of prevailing models for early development of the universe. Among the scientists responsible for the landmark discovery is Stanford University assistant professor Kuo Chao-lin, a Taiwanese-born physicist who studied at National Taiwan University. 

Researchers from several US universities gathered at Harvard University to hold the startling press conference on Monday. Second from the right is Kuo Chao-lin, a Taiwanese scientist who designed the detector used in the discovery.

This is not something that’s just a home run but a grand slam. It’s the smoking gun for inflation.

Scientists theorized that the Big Bang 14 billion years ago and the rapid expansion that followed initiated ripples in space-time known as gravitational waves. For years they believed that those ripples exist but they could never find direct evidence. This group found distortion in the microwave energy left over from the Big Bang that it believes could only be gravitational waves.

The theory of cosmic inflation, something that had been hypothesized for 30 years, and now here is a direct prediction made by that theory that has been confirmed.

The team conducted research in the South Pole because its dry, clear climate makes it ideal for observing microwaves from the Big Bang. The Taiwanese scientist, Kuo, describes the remote location as a kind of home away from home. In two weeks time, Kuo is expected to return to Taiwan.

Tourist numbers steady after price hike at Kaohsiung’s Former British Consulate at Takao (2014/03/18)

The National Palace Museum’s decision to raise admission prices from July has drawn much criticism. But if the ticket price hike at Kaohsiung’s Former British Consulate at Takao last week serves as a barometer of expected impact, tourist numbers are unlikely to vary heavily. 

Kaohsiung’s second-class national historic monument, the Former British Consulate at Takao, has been described as one of the best scenic areas in Kaohsiung. It comes at a cost, as visitors felt when the price of admission increased from NT$30 to NT$66 on March 11.

At the end of last year, we finished restoring the office at the base of the hill and this ancient pathway. Our total exhibition area increased from 2,100 square meters to 5,000 square meters. Because of this, we decided to increase the admission fee.

Despite more than doubling, the hike was only around NT$30. Many visitors from China still consider it a bargain, as admission to some Chinese attractions can run far higher.

China Airlines and others hope roll out of new menus will please passengers (2014/03/19)

China Airlines is revamping its in-flight menu with the help of Michelin-starred chefs. It hopes the new menu attracts culinary inclined passengers. 

China Airlines is hoping that expensive seafood will lure passengers away from other airlines. It partnered with a local hotel to provide high-end meals on European routes and will change up the menu every season.

The main design of the menu accommodates spring, summer, fall and winter. It is also suitable for airline routes and offers a different choice of ingredients for a range of passengers.

This menu was produced by Michelin-starred chefs from Beijing, Berlin and other cities. The meals come at quite a price in terms of ingredients and effort. Keeping them fresh on a long flight can also be quite a challenge.
