Dog rehab / 犬隻復健
New US center offers help for dogs consumed by fear
People want their dog to be a friend, not afraid. But sometimes fear grips dogs so tightly that they shake, cower, bite, growl or pee. It can be constant, painful and hard to overcome. Such dread can consume a dog when it's freed from a cage at a puppy mill or hoarder's home because that's the only life the dog has ever known.
Until now, it was up to animal shelters to ease the fears, knowing if they didn't, euthanasia was the likely alternative. But recently, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) opened its Behavioral Rehabilitation Center at St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey. It's a two-year research project being financed by the ASPCA.

Hunting for shark teeth / 尋找鯊魚牙齒
Join the search for shark fossils in the waters off the coast of Florida
Paul Reinckens swam slowly over the sandy bottom of the ocean in the Gulf of Mexico looking for triangular objects — not an easy task considering that this was his first dive and visibility was only a meter or so in the dark, cloudy water. But suddenly, there it was: a hard, brownish-gray object lying on the sand.
Overjoyed, Reinckens picked it up, stuck it in a bag and continued looking. A few minutes later, he found a similar object. "It's fun!" said the volunteer firefighter from New York, as he climbed back on board a dive boat.

Airport pups / 機場小狗
The newest dogs in US airports are searching for hugs, not drugs
There's a new kind of dog in U.S. airports, but these canines aren't sniffing for drugs or bombs — they're looking for people who need a friend, a belly to rub or a paw to shake.
Airports can be very stressful places due to the crowds, long lines and security checks, and these dogs are intended to help people relax. "His job is to be touched," volunteer Kyra Hubis said of Henry James, her golden retriever that works a few hours a week at one California airport. "I just stand there with him and let the travelers talk to him."

Petting zoos / 寵物動物園
people young and old relish the chance to interact with some cute animals
Sheep and goats may not be known as party animals, but they're increasingly at the center of celebrations as petting zoos grow in popularity in the U.S. for birthdays, graduations and a range of other bashes.
Petting a gentle animal of any kind seems to appeal to the young, the old and everyone in between. Daycare centers, schools, churches and even nursing homes rent mobile zoos that will bring animals and handlers to them or organize trips to petting zoos. "You can see the absolute joy as they are sitting there stroking some animal, particularly if it's the first time they have touched one," said Sky Shivers, superintendent of Fairview Farms at the Los Angeles County Fair.

Pet Meals on Wheels / 寵物飼料配送服務
Seniors and disabled in America get help feeding their furry friends
If Meals on Wheels didn't deliver donated dog food, Sherry Scott of San Diego says her golden retriever Tootie would be eating the pasta, riblets and veggie wraps meant for her. But thanks to partnerships between the program for low-income seniors and pet groups across the U.S., fewer people and pets are going hungry.

Panda invasion / 貓熊入侵
Eye-catching exhibition reminds us of the importance of protecting wildlife
An outdoor exhibition featuring 1,600 papier-mache giant pandas opened in downtown Taipei recently, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors after some imaginative panda "flash mobs" made headlines across the country in the buildup to the event. This eye-catching, not to mention incredibly cute, exhibition is not simply an opportunity for people to take pictures with adorable panda sculptures, however. It is designed to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation.
