Larry King Bows Out
With his trademark glasses and suspenders, Larry King is a familiar face to millions of viewers across the globe. Larry King Live, which ends this month after 25 years on air, has been a flagship for CNN.
Hailed as the “master of the mike” by Time magazine, King has an estimated fortune of around US$150 million and multiple honors including an Emmy and 10 CableACE Awards. In a 53-year career, he has conducted more than 50,000 interviews, and was named the top TV interviewer of all time by the broadcast industry magazine Talkers. So how did a working class kid who barely finished high school rise to the top?
A pivotal experience in King’s life was the death of his father. King says he threw himself into broadcasting to fill the hole left by his father. He started out as an interviewer on local radio in Miami, broadcasting from a restaurant and talking to anyone who walked in. King’s appeal was his relaxed manner and an ability to connect with people from all walks of life, from waiters to celebrities. “I’m an everyday guy, and my interviews attract everyday guys,” he writes in his autobiography. “But they also attract the everyday guy in people who can do things that are special.”
