President Obama pledges meaningful gun control reform to prevent shootings (2012/12/17)

President Obama visited Connecticut on Sunday to attend the memorial service for victims of a deadly shooting. He called for an end to such incidents and promised to use whatever powers available to him to prevent another tragedy from happening I the future.

Parents became emotional when President Obama read out the names of children killed during the Sandy Hook shooting.

US President
(God has called them all home. For those of us who remain, let us find the strength to carry on)

Two days after the Sandy Hook shooting, Obama personally visited the small town in New England to attend a memorial service for the victims.

This is the fourth trip of Obama's presidency to a grieving city in the aftermath of a mass shooting. In the next couple weeks, he pledges to do everything in his power as president to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

(We can’t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end and to end them, we must change.)

Although Obama did not specify what reforms should be taken, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called on the president to take immediate action on gun control.
Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy also urged stricter gun control legislation and free mental care during a TV interview.

Dan Malloy
Conn. Governor
(I think there’s certain problems we have in our society, that have to be addressed. We don't treat the mentally ill well. We don't reach out to families that are in trouble particularly well. We allowed the assault weapons ban to lapse. )

Gun control has been a controversial issue in the US for several decades. Although President Obama promises to take meaningful action to stop such massacres from happening again, the world is watching closely, with many hoping this tragedy will lead to meaningful reforms in gun control legislation.
