Abe Shinzo is being given a rare second chance to redeem himself as Japan’s Prime Minister. Lawmakers in Taiwan have different views on how his comeback would shape the future of Japan- Taiwan relations.
Shinzo Abe, the man set to become Japan’s next prime minister, has visited Taiwan twice and met with many political heavyweights, including President Ma Ying-jeou. His visit in 2010 caused some political controversy as he and his entourage rode a taxi for a private appointment, without diplomatic protection.

Abe is very friendly to Taiwan. He doesn’t care about (taking a taxi) because he is an easy-going person, and never made a fuss about it.
But some legislators believe his strong stance on territorial rows may have contributed to his comeback.

Without mutual agreement in the sovereignty issue, our fishing boats may face a higher risk of arrest when fishing near waters off the disputed Diaoyutai Islands.
Although Foreign Minster stressed that relations between Taiwan and Japan have actually warmed during the sovereignty row, former representative to Japan Koh Se-kai said that there’s still a variable to consider as President Ma’s pro-China economic stance contradicts Abe’s diplomatic agenda.
