其實，每個人的大腦都不一樣，沒有所謂「完全正常」的標準配備，只有能不能適應這社會的問題。有些病人如果遇到感情創傷，可能會被拋棄或伴侶劈腿，會做出傷害自己或有些失去理智的行為，但我們通常不會因為這樣就認為這是「精神病人」，因為這符合我們大腦想像中對情傷的反應模式。有些主管會過度要求細節，苛求部屬完成很難達成、而且沒有經濟效益的目標，否則動輒大怒，但我們也不會認為這是「精神病人」，只會認為他缺乏管理技巧。
現在會來精神科求助的人越來越多，大部分都是中輕度的症狀。許多人都是因為長期累積的壓力、或同時發生太多事情難以應付、或失戀或失業或車禍或法律糾紛或夫妻家人失和，強迫意念、胡思亂想、恐慌焦慮、嚴重失眠什麼都一下跑出來。這些算是「精神病人」嗎？說是，也不是。
