A New Zealand study has found that being around a heavy drinker could affect people’s health and well-being.

Researchers at Massey University in Auckland surveyed more than 3,000 people for the study, which was published in Addiction.

They found that those with a family member, friend or colleague who drinks heavily generally gave lower ratings to their own health and well-being.

Compared to people who did not have heavy drinkers in their lives, they also did less well on standard measures of general health, including chronic pain, anxiety and depression symptoms - and had lower overall satisfaction with life.

Lead researcher Sally Casswell says the average effect was similar to what has been seen in studies of people caring for somebody with a disability.

But Professor Casswell acknowledged that the findings do not prove that being around a heavy drinker was the root of study participants’ problems, noting that the study is just "a snapshot at one point in time".

It’s possible, she noted, that people with poorer well-being are more likely to attract heavy drinkers into their lives, for example.
