Many books become bestsellers or become a major part of pop culture. Few novels, however, have a direct influence on the course of history. In the 1800s, the second-biggest selling book was Uncle Tom's Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Not only was it popular, but many people, including President Abraham Lincoln, believed Uncle Tom's Cabin helped start the American Civil War. That means that this book eventually led to the end of slavery.

許多書籍都能成為暢銷書或是流行文化的主要部分。不過極少有小說會對歷史發展的過程產生直接的影響。十九世紀時，第二大暢銷書為哈里特•比徹•斯托所寫的《湯姆叔叔的小屋》。這本書不但受歡迎，而且包含美國前總統亞伯拉罕•林肯在內的許多人都認為《湯姆叔叔的小屋》是美國南北戰爭的導火線之一。這表示這本書終究帶來奴隸制度的終結。
