Japan PM admits underestimating the scale of China’s Tiaoyutai response (2012/09/21)

Even more heated reactions have been seen in China. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda admits he underestimated the extent of China’s response to the Tiaoyutai purchase and hopes diplomacy can smooth damaged relations.
After Japan nationalized the Tiaoytuai Islands, fury followed in China. A chill fell over bilateral relations. In an interview with TV Asahi on Wednesday, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said he knew China would be upset, but he did not expect such ferocity or relentlessness. Noda admits he misjudged the situation and underestimated the consequences.
To repair relations, Noda is considering sending a special envoy to China. He says improvements are needed on the diplomatic, political and economic fronts. Beijing claims it has always felt the issue should be settled at the negotiating table.
