After spending almost 24 years under house arrest, Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was finally freed in late 2010. This June, after more than 20 years after being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, she arrived in Norway’s capital, Oslo, ahead of a ceremony to mark the honor.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s two-week-long trip to Europe could be seen as another milestone for Burma’s political progress. It’s also taken as a sign of her confidence in the government of President Thein Sein, who has pursued a course of reform since coming to power last year. In her long-delayed acceptance speech, she praised the power of this honor for both shattering her sense of isolation and shining an enduring spotlight on the injustices in her military-controlled homeland.
