Rear facing seats on new city busses are causing discomfort (2012/11/11)

The Taipei area is seeing more and more buses constructed with low chassis to assist senior citizens and those in wheelchairs. Unfortunately, many of these busses have seats that face the rear, leading passengers to complain of motion sickness.

When passengers board the bus at the bus stop, many people fight for seats on this special low-floor bus. However, some people still prefer to stand rather than sit in a rear-facing seat.

Recently, bus operators have been receiving complaints that those sitting in rear facing seats can experience dizziness after prolonged travel. Doctors say that when the body feels forward movement while the eyes receiving images showing it is traveling backward, confusion within the body’s nervous system can lead to feelings of motion sickness.

Because the floor is lower on these busses, the seats are a little higher up and -floor busses and forward-facing seat passengers have less leg room making it uncomfortable.

Originally, these busses were designed with rear facing seats as they were thought be more comfortable for passengers, but actually the opposite has turned out to be the case. Bus operators are hoping the public to be understanding as they seek a solution to this problem.
